Hardened Backup and Disaster Recovery

An Enterprise Solution for Small Business...

Backups and Disaster Recovery (BDR) is a critical component of any business now, but backups tend to be erratic and hard to maintain. About 30% of Syscon's routine support requests are related to tape backup issues. However, there is a new technology that is reasonably priced for the small to mid-sized business that is an all-encompassing solution for backups and disaster recovery. The technology is called NAS (Network Attached Storage) and replaces the traditional tape backup.

The NAS solution is continuously monitored by Syscon, does not require tapes or user intervention, and has the same restore capabilities as a full GFS tape rotation with off-site storage - an industry best practice. If your server fails, the NAS device will provide a virtual replacement for your server using "Virtual Server" technology.

It works like this:
  • Syscon installs a device (NAS) on your computer network.
  • An exact image of your network server or servers is stored on the NAS - this is called the "base image" of the server.
  • The base image is sent to a off-site data storage center.
  • Every 15 minutes, every change made on your server is captured on the NAS device. These are called "incremental images".
  • Each night, a copy of the incremental image is moved to the off-site data storage center.

And the benefits...

  • Restores of multiple versions of files, e-mail folders and messages, and even entire servers can be completed in a fraction of the time that would be required from a tape backup.
  • If a server fails, a temporary "virtual" server can be up and running in minutes, minimizing any downtime for your business.
  • In the case of a total disaster, your entire server can be restored from off-site data storage to a new location.

Start up costs for a NAS BDR system is comparable to a new tape drive system. The cost for off-site data storage is based on the amount of data stored, but replaces the need to purchase tapes.
